General Curriculum
Get ready to take your education to the next level with the Shackouls Honors College! Our program offers not one, but two exciting pathways for you to pursue graduation with honors. Choose the Cursus Honorum and follow a specific path to earn your honors degree. Or, opt for the General Honors pathway and select from a diverse range of courses that best suit your schedule and career goals.
To maintain good standing in the Honors College while pursuing the Cursus Honorum, you'll need to meet the requirements outlined in the program. For those following the General Honors pathway, you'll need:
-
Successful completion of one honors-level course during the first semester at MSU;
-
Successful completion of at least one 3 credit hour honors course per academic year;
-
Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or above to remain in good standing;
-
Successful completion of a Senior Capstone Experience Project.
The Senior Capstone Experience is a key component of both pathways, giving you the chance to showcase your skills and knowledge. By October 15th of your senior year you should submit your capstone proposal for approval. From there, you can complete a substantial presentation in your major field of study, intern with a group of professionals and present your findings, or undertake a research project culminating in an Honors Thesis with formal defense. The possibilities are endless and the opportunities are waiting for you at the Shackouls Honors College!

Advising
The Shackouls Honors College offers advising to students in addition to meeting with their major (discipline) academic advisor. Honors advising not only guides students to meet the requirements necessary to stay in good standing in the Honors College, but it also encourages students to take advantage of Honors course offerings in areas of interest to them. In addition to guiding students to academic success and Honors completion, Honors advisors help students identify opportunities across Mississippi State University, including opportunities to get involved in university clubs and organizations, become involved in the community, study abroad, pursue undergraduate research, apply for competitive scholarships and fellowships, and explore career and professional development.
