Tanner DeYoung, a senior at Mississippi State University, shares his thoughts on the invaluable benefits of gaining experience in public service regardless of one’s major or field of study in an article published on the Stennis Center for Public Service website. DeYoung is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry with minors in political science and chemistry. The summer internship with the Helsinki Commission in Washington D.C. provided him the opportunity to work alongside Congressional members and other political figures all focusing on international human rights and healthcare. “My internship helped me improve my ability to advocate and learn about human rights debates and specific legislation. It also taught me that opportunities in public service do not have to appear related to your particular field for them to be beneficial,” DeYoung wrote.
